View looking southwest at the Temple and the southern portico of the Temple.
Note the low fence (= balustrade) that surrounded the temple. On it were inscriptions in Latin and Greek that forbade Gentiles from going into the inner portions of the temple area-Click Here to view one of the originals.
In the distance on the left (south) is the “Royal Portico” that was constructed by Herod the Great (37–4 B.C.). It is interesting to note that the early church gathered there (Luke 24:53; Acts 2:46).
