A view of the base of the thick, but hollow, cylindrical core.  Behind the fallen brickwork the opening to the interior of the core is visible.

The burial urn of Augustus was probably placed within this hollow core. The original-140-foot-high cylinder supported a large bronze statue of Augustus on the top in ancient times.  It was visible from the outside to all.

It looks like it was made out of Roman bricks and cement.  I assume that it originally was faced with marble.
