View looking west and down on to the Hellenistic (fourth century B.C.) fortifications of Assos. Right of center note the well-preserved gate. On the left side of the wall notice the two staircases that lead up to the top of the wall (one upper left and the other below and right of center).
These fortifications are some of the best preserved in the world. They are over 2 miles [3km] long and in places are preserved to a height of 45 feet [14m].
