The hanging wooden beam on the left side of the image is a “simandron.” The monks strike these rhythmically with mallets to call the other monks to prayer. These “simandrons” came into use during periods when the ringing of bells was forbidden.
This simandron is located in the balcony that overlooks the lower courtyard of the monastery.
