View looking east from the west end of the forum of Philippi with the Curia.  This is the rectangular structure in the foreground.   Beyond it, and to the right (south) is the Roman forum.  The Greek name for this structure is bouleuterion.  For another view of this structure Click Here.

There is a possibility that Paul and Silas appeared before the Philippian magistrates in this building (Acts 16:19–22, 35–40) although this may have occurred in the basilica.

Because Philippi was a Roman Colony settled by veterans, the magistrates would have been high-ranking military men—or descendants of them.  In the NT (Acts 16 they are called στρατηγὸς (= captain, commander, chief magistrate).
