View from Nebi Samwil looking north–northeast at the site of el–Jib (biblical Gibeon). Note the limestone terracing that is visible on the surface making stratigraphic excavation difficult. On the left (west) side of the image the village of el–Jib is visible (this photograph was taken in the 1970’s before significant development of the village took place).
On the horizon are the outskirts of the modern city of Ramallah, prior to its development from 1980—to–date. Note the low limestone hills with terracing. This is one of the few “plateau” areas in the hill country north of Jerusalem.
Most of the excavations of James Pritchard took place on the northeastern slopes of the hill—to the right of the minaret and just out of site.
