View looking north at the southern wall of the Herodian enclosure wall of the Tomb of the Patriarchs.
All of the visible remains, except the smooth rounded portions at the top, are Herodian (37-4 B.C.). The lower courses of stones match those of the Herodian Temple platform in Jerusalem.
Note the protruding attached square columns (= pilasters). These alternate with recessed areas helping to present an attractive variegated surface due to the changing shadows projected during the day.
