View looking south at the center of the Kathisma Church. The protruding bed rock just to the left of center is at the center of the concentric octagons and was the place commemorating Mary's resting/sitting upon it.
According to the Protoevangelium of James, Mary rested (Kathisma, Greek for “seat” or “chair”) on the way to Bethlehem.
