A detailed view of the strata within the cut (trench) that is being excavated on the upper tell of Tell el–Hesi in the 1970's.
Note how carefully the sides of the cut have been trimmed so that it is possible to "read" the sides of the trench. Note also the tip lines in the trim just to the left of the ladder as well as the chalk to the right of the top of the ladder.
The two vessels in the picture are modern! And today, typically sandbags are used instead of the stones that outline the top of the baulk.
