View looking west at Tel Azekah and the Valley of Elah from Kh. Qeiyafa. Azekah is the mostly barren hill on the left horizon. On the far right side of the image (north) is the Israeli village of Zecharya—sometimes identified with Shaaraim (1 Sam 17:52). Between Zecharya and Azekah the Valley of Elah flows away from the viewer out to the coastal plain—towards Gath of the Philistines. This is possibly the retreat route of the Philistines fleeing from the Israelites towards Gath and Ekron (1 Sam 17:52).
Azekah is situated about 1 mi. [1.6 km] west of Kh. Qeiyafa and Gath is about 5.2 mi. [8.4 km.] west of Azekah (as the crow/bee flies).
