View of the excavations on the podium of the Temple of Augustus and Roma. View looking southeast.
Although the details are difficult to pick out, the stone wall just left of center was part of the foundation of an octagonal Byzantine Church that was built in this area — after the Temple had been destroyed. It may be that this octagonal church served as a model for the octagonal Moslem "Dome of the Rock" in Jerusalem.
The sequence of structures on the site seems to have been: Temple of Augustus and Roma, Byzantine Church, Mosque. Fragments of architectural elements including portions of columns and frescos have been found in the area. The structures that are visible in the image were made out of the local fossilize sandstone known as kurkar.
