View looking south inside of the "Mosque of the Ascension." In the center of the image, embedded in the south wall is the mihrab that directs Muslims towards Mecca during their prayers.
Directly in front of the mihrab is a marble slab the function of which is unknown. To the right (west) of the marble slab is a stone encased in marble. This stone is said to contain the "footprint" of Jesus. Just beyond it is a container containing sand in which votive candles are placed.
The opening in the far wall is the doorway that leads into the compound from the street. The minaret on the far side of the wall was first constructed in the seventeenth century.
