View looking east down the central nave, at the interior of the Church of the Transfiguration. On both sides of the nave are aisles.
There are two levels in the central apse of the church. During excavations, a grotto was found and so a lower chapel, behind and below the rope, commemorating the human nature of Jesus was constructed. Above it is the chapel of the Transfiguration—emphasizing the divine nature of Jesus.
The Church was designed by Antonio Barluzzi and built on the remains of Byzantine and Crusader churches. It was completed in 1924.
