View looking west southwest at the entrance to the synagogue that is in the eastern wall of the building.
Originally the whole door was carved of one solid piece of limestone—which is very unusual! Usually the lintel and doorposts were carved of individual blocks of stone.
The niche of the synagogue, facing towards Jerusalem, is located in the southern wall of the structure—just left of the center of the image with a small green bush growing in it.
Legend says that when the lintel is reconstructed the Messiah will return. The Messiah is nicknamed "Menahem son of Amiel."
