View of a white limestone architectural fragment from the Capernaum synagogue. Note the cart with two of its six-spoke wheels visible. Above the wheels, five columns are visible and on the right (front) side of the cart, a double door is visible. Above the door is a shell-shaped semi-circle on top of which is the convex roof.
Some have suggested that this is merely a representation of a Roman cart (carruca), while others have maintained that it was a smaller mobile cart, actually an "ark," which was used in the synagogue to house the biblical scrolls. If this were its function, it might have been rolled out into the nave of the synagogue just prior to the services. This is not very probable, but the double doors do resemble the doors of the permanent "arks" that are visually represented in other synagogues.
