View of the hill on which a Byzantine Chapel is located. This chapel is located to the southeast of the Kursi Church and apparently commemorates the casting of demons into the swine.
The synoptic gospels (Matt 8:28–34; Mark 5:1–20; Luke 8:26–39) relate a story where Jesus cast the demons out of a possessed man (Matthew mentions two; Matt 8:28) into a herd of swine that in turn ran down the hill perishing in the lake. Matthew describes this event as happening in "the country of the Gadarenes [Gadara/Umm Qeis]" while Mark and Luke call it "the country of the Gerasenes [Gerasa/Jerash]."
