View looking south (downstream) from a vantage point about 14 mi. [22 km.] north of Carchemish. At this point (near Birecik) the Euphrates is about 100 yards [90 m.] wide and thus, without bridges, presents a formidable barrier to east west traffic: thus the importance of crossings such as Carchemish to the south and Zeugma (Roman site) to the north of Birecik.
