View looking northwest down onto "St. Paul's Church," also called the "Great Basilica." It is laid out with a central nave and two narrower side aisles. The roof over the central nave of the church was supported by two rows of thirteen columns each. At the east end of the central nave was a single apse. The floors of the church were covered with mosaics—only partially preserved.
On the west side was a narthex 90 ft. by 42 ft. There was an annex to the north as well as a baptismal pool. It was built in the late fourth-century AD and remodeled several times.
Some believe there are remains of a synagogue, which Paul preached in, below this church. But to my knowledge, there is no archaeological evidence of this.
