View looking east at the present-day Cayster River. This picture was taken about 0.3 mi. [0.5 km] east of the Aegean Sea—looking east. The Cayster flows from the upper center towards the lower-left past the viewer.
In the New Testament Era, this area was actually part of the Aegean Sea, but due to silting this area—about 3 mi. [5 km] west of the NT site of Ephesus—is now dry/marshland.
The hill on the central horizon is Panayir Dag (ancient Mt. Pion) on the slopes of which the famous theater of Ephesus was built.
