View looking east at the niche in the eastern wall of the synagogue that faced towards Jerusalem. Such niches, or chests, are called “arks,” and were used to store the Torah scrolls. During a synagogue service, these scrolls would be ritually removed from the ark and placed on a table near the center of the synagogue from where the Torah would be read.
