Kadesh is an ancient city located on the east bank of the Orontes River in modern Syria. There, in 1275 B.C. the powerful Egyptian King, Rameses II fought the Hittite king, Muwatalli, to a draw. In the 1258 Rameses II and the Hittite king, Hattusilas III, signed a non–aggression treaty that also delimited spheres of influence.
This is one of three Akkadian cuneiform copies of that treaty that were discovered at Bogazkoy in 1906. Akkadian was the international language of that day.
