View looking east at the heavily eroded citadel at Sardis. In the lower left portion of the image are the well–preserved remains of the Artemis Temple.
This citadel gave the inhabitants of Sardis a strong sense of security. But on two occasions the citadel was conquered due to the carelessness of one of the defenders who gave clues as to where it could be entered.
