View of the Conon mosaic inscription in the lower level of the Church of the Annunciation.

Jerome Murphy–O'Connor translates it (p. 425) as "Gift of Conon deacon of Jerusalem."  Conon was martyred in Asia Minor during the reign of Decius and is said to have said "I am of Nazareth in Galilee, I am of the family of Christ to whom I offer a cut from the time of my ancestors" (JMO p. 424).

The best guide book to archaeological sites is Jerome Murphy-O'Connor's The Holyland: An Oxford Archaeological Guide, but be sure to have the 5th edition!!  Click Here to view purchase.
