In the lower half of the image is a eight line Latin inscription of the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius Antionius (Caracalla; A.D. 211–217).  It commemorates how the third Gallic Legion built the road here at Nahr el–Kalb in the third century A.D.

Above it is a modern obelisk (1942) celebrating the arrival of the French and Allied armies and the building of the railway from Naqoura to Tripoli.
