View looking southeast at the southern portion of the "Water Gate" at Carchemish. On the left hand side of the picture is the Euphrates River—with the railroad bridge and marshes. This gate provided access into and out of the city connecting the Lower Palace/Ceremonial area to the docks along the River. It was the northern most of the gates of several in the north-south wall that bordered the Euphrates River. There were gates in this area as early as the late second millennium BC.
The gate was first excavated in 1881-1882 and was fully excavated by C. L. Woolley in 1920. The Turco-Italian expedition resumed excavations in 2012.
This area has been and continues to be, an area of intense excavation and restoration.
