The Chapel of the True Cross is the lowest and eastern most portion of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher. A late tradition maintains that it was here that the Empress Helena, mother of Constantine, “found” three crosses—including the “true cross.”

This area was originally a quarry and later was turned into a cistern.
