The St. Demetrius (Ayios Dimitrios) church (basilica) is the largest church in Greece. It was built in honor of St. Demetrius, the patron saint of Thessalonica who was martyred by Galerius in the early fourth century. It was built in the fifth century and after being gutted by the great fire of 1917 it was rebuilt to resemble the seventh century structure.
