View looking south at the water system that was located on the north side of the mound (= #7 on labeled model) — just outside the Israelite city gates.
The staircase in the upper right portion of the image leads down from the outer gate complex (#1b) to the area where a water reservoir was located (the parched area in the bottom half of the image).
The University of Chicago expedition called this staircase a “processional way,” but Yadin’s excavations have demonstrated that it was part of a water system located at the city gate.
