View looking west at the east side of Hadrian's Gate.  This ceremonial gate marked the boundary between the old and the new city.

The inscription on this (the east) side of the gate reads: "This is the City of Hadrian and not of Theseus."  On the west side the inscription reads "This is Athens the Ancient City of Theseus."

Hadrian was Roman Emperor from A.D. 117–138—and was a great lover of Greece culture.  This gate is 60 ft. [18 m.] high and 44 ft. [13.5 m.] wide.
