View looking west at the front of the Doric style Temple of Hera. Hera was the sister and wife of Zeus, whose temple was located to the south (the left) of hers. She was the protector of women and marriage.
This spot may actually have been the spot of the first temple at Olympia and it went through a number of developments (mud brick walls to stone walls; wooden to stone columns; etc.).In addition to the Olympic Games, games for women(!) in honor of Hera were held every four years by the second century A.D.
