View looking north across the "orchestra" of the Roman Theater at Scythopolis. The scane frons is partially reconstructed—it was originally 60 feet high! Beyond it, note the excavated lower city of Scythopolis and in the distance the Tel of Bet Shean. This photo was taken in 2006—after the extensive excavation of the lower city! Compare this photo BEFORE the excavation of the lower city and a partially rebuilt scane frons.
The theater was built in the second century A.D. upon an earlier first century theater. It seated 7,000 persons.
