View of the upper portion of two of the columns at the east end of the Temple of Artemis. These two are interesting for they are still standing since the time they were put in place in antiquity and have not been restored! They were never fluted.
Note the indentations. These are places were metal clamps were inserted to assist in the raising of the columns by a crane.
This temple was built over centuries, and was never completed. It is estimated that only 20 columns were ever erected for this temple. In AD 1444, twelve were still standing, in 1750 only 6 columns, and now two!
