View of a cutaway portion of the drum of a column that had toppled from its place. On the outside, it had been fluted. Note that it had five square holes, the larger central one, and four spaced near the edge of the drum. These would have had dowels, of metal and/or wood, that held the drum in place. The rough circular area would have served the same purpose.
This temple was built over centuries, and was never completed. It is estimated that only 20 columns were ever erected for this temple. In AD 1444 12 were still standing, in 1750 only 6 columns, and now two!
