View looking west. In the foreground are the remains of columns, which lined the northern portico of the Palaestra. A Palaestra was used for wrestling and athletic training.

The large structure at the rear of the image is the reconstructed façade of the entrance to the Gymnasium complex – sometimes called the "Marble Hall." This building was excavated and reconstructed by the Harvard and Cornell Universities expedition to Sardis.
