Tower of the Winds 6

photo

View looking west at the south (back) side of the Tower of the Winds.

Note the semicircular turret/reservoir that is attached to the south (left) face of the structure. This served as a reservoir for the water clock (horologion) that was inside the building. Water came from the Klepsidra spring that was located on the north side of the Acropolis — and the word “clepsydra” meaning “water clock” is derived from the name of that spring which was used to supply this clock with water!
