Megaron

photo

View looking southeast down into the “megaron” of the citadel of Mycenae. In the center of this square structure note the foundation of a circular hearth that was surrounded by four columns. The whole area was covered except a circular area above the hearth though which smoke could exit the room.

“Megaron” is the Greek word for “large room”—it measured 42 x 39 ft. [12.7 by 11.8 m]. This room was probably the main room of the palace at Mycenae. It probably had a second floor and its walls were plastered.
