View of the southwest corner of the Cave of Machpelah. All of the lower stones of this structure are from the Herodian period (37–4 BC). Note the “pilasters", the projecting elements that help break up the monotony of a plain wall.

Many people rightfully assume that the Jerusalem Temple Platform was also “decorated” in this way.
