Conical Turning Cones

View of three conical turning points made of Aswan (Egypt) granite that are about 6.5 ft. [2 m.] high. These are collected along the western edge of the hippodrome—west of the re–erected obelisk.

These, and similar cones, were placed at the ends of the hippodrome around which the chariots raced. At Caesarea, in the Late Roman Period (second - early fourth century A.D.) four–horse chariot teams made twelve circuits around the hippodrome racing for a total distance of 6.2 mi. [10 km.].
