First Temple of Hera I Exterior 2

photo

View looking southwest at the northeast corner of the "First Temple of Hera"—the southern most of the three well-preserved temples at Paestum. This was the first of the three to be constructed, ca. 550-540 B.C. It has 9 columns on the short sides and 18 on the long sides. The central room was divided by 7 columns running down the center of it into two long rooms (possibly two deities were worshiped here?). It is of the Doric style built on a three-tiered platform (= crepidoma).
