Synagogue Interior

photo

View looking south at the southern, or Jerusalem wall of the building. Directly in front of the far wall - in the center of the image - is one course of stones of the raised platform called a "bema." It has been suggested that a wooden cabinet was constructed upon it. This cabinet (ark) would have housed the Torah scrolls.

The building is a basilica in style and modern wooden benches are in the central nave. To the right and left are the side aisles. For a detail of the "Ionic style" capitals Click Here. The synagogue measures 49 x 57 ft. [15 x 17.5 m.].

This reconstructed building is the second of the two synagogues that stood on this site.
