Amphitheater Interior

photo

View of the interior to the Amphitheater at Puteoli (modern Pozzuoli) along the long axis. It measures 482 x 384 feet. The modern grating covers the long underground passageway. At various points, scenery and/or animals could be raised via "elevators" to the floor of the amphitheater.

This amphitheater was constructed in the late first century A.D. and is called the "Flavian Amphitheater." It was probably built about the same time as the Colosseum in Rome and is the third largest amphitheater in Italy. It could hold up to 50,000 spectators.
