Bronze Head of Emperor Septimus

photo

A bronze head of the Roman emperor Lucius Septimius Severus (A.D. 193–211) found at Bubon. Second century A.D.

It is extremely rare to find bronze statues. Most of them were melted down in antiquity.

This head was found in the ancient city of Bubon that is located in the Gölhisar District north of Antalya, Türkiye. It was discovered during clandestine excavations in the Sebasteion in the city and was smuggled abroad (Denmark). The Sebasteion is a name given to structures built for deified Roman Emperors. It was recently returned to Türkiye and is on display in the Archaeology Museum in Antalya.
