Hadrian’s Gate Detail

View looking west at Hadrian’s Gate—a monumental three–arched entrance to the city. The Roman emperor Hadrian (A.D. 117–138) visited Attalia in A.D. 130. This gate was built to commemorate his visit.

Note the Ionic column resting on a high base—called a plinth. Plinths were used during the Roman and Byzantine eras, but not during the earlier Greek period—when the columns rested on a low stylobate. Note too the “coffiers” in the arch of the gate.
