Dionysus Temple Stoneworkers' Marks

photo

View of stone workers' marks on architectural fragments from the Dionysus Temple at Pergamum.

On the left piece notice the two Greek letters lambda and beta. On the other a cross mark and a nu and an alpha.

The Dionysus Temple was first built in the Hellenistic Period (ca. early second century B.C.). It was later rebuilt and also dedicated to the Roman Emperor Caracalla (r. A.D. 211–217) under the name the "New Dionysus."
