Food Market (Macellum

View looking down (south) at the Food Market (macellum) of Sagalassos. P. Aelius Akulas, a local benefactor who had received the Roman citizenship under Hadrian, built the market at the end of the second century A.D. It measures 70x70 ft. [21x21 m.] and was surrounded on three sides by colonnades and shops. It was open to the south. In the center was a circular structure 21 ft. [6.4 m.] in diameter; tholos) that may have been a fountain and/or a pool in which fish were kept for sale.

In the distance are mountains south of Sagalassos and the red roofs are houses in the village of Aglasun.
