The area of “Central Jordan” stretches from Amman in the north to Kerak in the south.  This area was the home of the Moabites.

In biblical times the area north of the Arnon River (Wadi Mujib) was allotted to and settled by the Israelite tribes of Reuben and Gad.  North of the Arnon the plateau reaches 2,100 ft. [640 m.] in elevation — the tableland of Moab (the Mishor) and was home to the Reubenites and Gadites.

The area to the south of the Arnon but north of the Zered was the old "heartland" of the Moabites.  There elevations rise to 3,600 ft. [1100 m.].  Settlements tended to cling to the peaks of these ridges, for the Arabian Desert is only a few miles to the east-beginning at Quatrana.
