View looking south at Leander’s Tower. The Asian shore is on the left (east) while the European shore is visible on the right (west). This tower is situated just off shore from the Asian city of Uskudar. In its current form, it dates to the eighteenth century. It has been used as fortress, a quarantine center, a lighthouse, a customs control point, a tollgate, and as an observation post to monitor shipping through the Bosphorus. It is even featured in a James Bond movie!
