View looking southeast at the dedicated to Egyptian deities.  Above it, and to the right (looking south) the fields in the plain that the Meander has made are visible.

Inscriptions discovered in the vicinity indicated that this large altar [14.6 x 7.3 x 1.7 m.] was dedicated to Egyptian deities such as Isis, Serapis, Osiris, Anubis and Harpocrates.  It is somewhat of a mystery as to why Egyptian deities were worshiped at Priene.  This is possibly due to Egypt’s attempt to control the Aegean about 240 B.C., or possibly it reflects commercial contacts between Egypt and Priene during this period.
