View looking east at the "White Tower." The White Tower is one of the most prominent landmarks in Thessaloniki. It was built by the Turks around A.D. 1430. It was part of the southeastern fortifications of the city. After a bloody massacre there in 1826 it was called the "Bloody Tower," but then it was whitewashed – and thus today is called the "White Tower" – even though the whitewash has long disappeared.
It is 115 ft. [35 m.] high.
