A portion of the pediment of the earliest Parthenon made of tufa, a porous limestone that dates to the sixth century B.C. — Archaic Period. Carved in very bold relief, the three male heads seem to be associated with the “snake tail” on the right side of the image.
Note not only the details of the faces, but especially the well–preserved colors on the men and the “snake.” Also, notice how this sculpture solved the problem of how to fill the decreasing space as the roofline approached the horizontal lintel!
